Two-week course Applied Public Health
In November 2007 Netherlands School of Public & Occupational Health in
consortium with the Social Medicine Department of the Academic Medical Centre/University
of Amsterdam organises the two-week training course Applied Public Health. The
course consists of: Modules, Workshops, Competence training, and Site visits. The course
is organised under the Matra programme of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Public health issues increasingly transcend national boundaries and governments. In a
globalising world health problems and solutions reach across national borders, resulting
in the need for international collaboration. Emerging infections are a good example of the
necessity for cross-border cooperation.
In the new member states and the (potential) candidate member states in Central and
Eastern Europe and in the neighbouring
countries of the European Union (EU) an increasing need for collaborative and cross-border
public health training is felt. There is a demand for opportunities to exchange expertise
and experiences, to network and to develop joint action to protect, promote and improve
the health of the population.
The course is aimed at public health policy makers and experts with a senior position in
governmental bodies or a position in national public health institutes with ample
experience in public health from the following countries:
- New EU-member states: Bulgaria and Romania
- Candidate-member states: Croatia, Turkey, Macedonia
- Potential candidate-member states: Montenegro, Serbia
- Eastern and southern EU-neighbours: Moldavia, Belarus, Ukraine,
Russian Federation, Jordan, Morocco
Applications should be made through
the Netherlands Embassy in the applicants country.
Applications forms should be down loaded from the website www.cross-agency.nl. Go to Downloads, click
on Application form for the relevant course, click on your country; you can
then download the application form.
Date: November 4 17, 2007
Venue: The Hague, The Netherlands
Deadline of submission of applications: September 14, 2007

Short
Courses in International Health Schedule 2007, University of Heidelberg, Germany
"We have again been able to add new courses to broaden the range of
our programme to address current issues in International Health. Most courses are
organised as two-week intensive courses which cost EUR 1.500. Our target group includes
MDs, nurses, pharmacists, policy makers, project / programme planners, managers, social
scientists, educators, consultants, health workers, etc. Participants have been sent e.g.
by GTZ, Medair, Doctors without Borders, MOHs, etc. Using current theories, case studies
and practical exercises, we continue to put stress on enhancing skills and abilities of
participants which they can put into practice in their daily work. Lecturers usually have
both an academic background and international work experience.
All courses are accredited within the international network of higher education called
tropEd, which offers a master programme in International Health, but the
courses are open for individual further training. The diversity of disciplines,
experiences and countries represented in class, adds to the rich learning environment.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of attendance
by the University of Heidelberg.
The course fee includes course materials, but not the accommodation, insurance or other
personal costs during the stay. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any scholarships at
present. Early registration is advisable to ensure a seat in the courses as well as to

Climate Change and Health:
Impact and Adaptation Policies
September 17
28, 2007
Climate change has become a reality which the health community is only slowly taking into
account. The potentially far-reaching adverse health effects, sometimes of irreversible
nature, need to be understood by researchers, practitioners and public health institutions
in order to develop and implement practices and policies to counter them. In low- and
middle-income countries especially, the issues are poorly studied and understood. The
objective of this course is to provide participants with the ability to recognize the
linkages between climate change and health and provide them with methods and tools to
manage the impact of climate change on health. Examples will be drawn, whenever possible,
from both developed and developing countries and cases studies will serve as a basis for
learning.
