Cancer Data
IARC:
Data vizualisation: cancer cases and incidence rates (Crude or age standardised) for all cancer sites by country, age, and sex. User can create tables or graphs.
Useful for comparisons between countries.
Cancer mortality can be found in WHO Mortality database:
Nordcan
Nordcan is a database of cancer statistics for the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. It includes information on the number of new cancer cases (incidence), cancer mortality, the number of individuals living with a cancer diagnosis (prevalence), and cancer survival. The various statistical data are freely available in tables and figures for more than 50 cancer entities. The population-based data in NORDCAN are more recent than those available for most other countries in the world, and the database is updated each year.
Cancer Data Quality
CancerWatch:
CancerWatch is an EU Joint Action that will transform how Europe collects, harmonises, and uses cancer data. Coordinated by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and involving 92 partner organisations from 29 countries, CancerWatch will enhance the quality, comparability, and timeliness of data from population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) across Europe.
Accurate, complete, and up-to-date cancer data are essential for monitoring trends, identifying inequalities, and evaluating the impact of prevention, early detection, and treatment programmes, as well as QoL and survival rates. CancerWatch will ensure that high-quality data are available to the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), which plays a central role in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the European Cancer Inequalities Registry (ECIR).
At present, cancer data across Europe vary in quality, coverage, and timeliness. Some regions lack full registry coverage, while others face delays of more than two years before data can be shared. CancerWatch will support cancer registries in capturing richer, more complete and timely data, using digital innovations, harmonise data quality standards across countries in line with European and international guidelines, develop technical solutions to address legal and GDPR-related barriers to sharing individual-level data, enabling secure use of aggregated statistics, and improve survival, prevalence, and other key cancer indicators in ECIS, ensuring they are up-to-date and fit for policymaking;Prepare cancer registries for integration into the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
CancerWatch unites national cancer registries, public health institutes, research organisations, and ministries of health in a coordinated effort to strengthen Europe’s cancer intelligence. The Joint Action will deliver new tools, shared methodologies, and a roadmap for future cancer indicators, while also identifying opportunities to expand registry coverage into currently uncovered regions.
Selected Cancer Registries
The Finnish Cancer Registry:
The Finnish Cancer Registry maintains the national registry of all the diagnosed cancer cases since 1953. It is also a statistical and epidemiological research institute that does active collaboration both nationally and internationally.
