The Department of Public Health and Social Medicine is a leading academic centre for education, research, and public engagement in public health at the Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed). Located within the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Department is committed to advancing public health science and practice through interdisciplinary research, high-quality education, evidence-informed policymaking, and cooperation with national and international partners.

The Department provides public health education across a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, emergency medicine, electroradiology, dietetics, and English-language programmes. It also plays a key role in developing and delivering dedicated public health degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, equipping future public health professionals with competencies spanning health promotion, disease prevention, epidemiology, health policy, health systems, and population health. In addition, the Department offers continuing professional development courses for physicians and dentists and is accredited to provide residency training in public health. 

Research conducted by the Department focuses on contemporary public health challenges and supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of public health interventions and policies. The Department actively promotes interdisciplinary, multicentre, and international research collaborations and contributes to public health advocacy, health policy development, and knowledge translation at local, national, and international levels.

The Department's academic community consists of experienced researchers, educators, doctoral candidates, and medical residents in public health. Staff members continuously strengthen their expertise through scholarly activity, international cooperation, and professional development in research methodology, innovative teaching approaches, and academic mentoring. The Department is dedicated to fostering the next generation of public health leaders and promoting evidence-based approaches to improving population health.
