The Faculty of Public Health of Medical University "Prof. Dr. P. Stoyanov" - Varna was established in 2001 by Decree of the Council of Ministers № 160/20.06.2001 and was one of the first two faculties of public health opened in Bulgaria.
The purpose of the Faculty of Public Health of MU-Varna is to produce highly qualified medical and non-medical specialists, needed for the health system, with professional competence in the field of public health and health care, health care management and technology, developing the relevant scientific fields and carrying out activities for the benefit of society.
The FPH MU-Varna prepares specialists with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the specialties of Nurse, Midwife, Speech Therapy, Clinical Speech Therapy, Kinesitherapy, Optometrist, Rehabilitation, Sea Treatment, Wellness and Spa, Public Health, Public Health Care, Public Health Care and Control, Health Management, Pharmaceutical Management, Health Care Management, Public Health in English and in Russian, Health Management and Care, Pharmaceutical Management and Care, Information Technology in Health and Health Care, Biomedical Engineering and Technology, and AI in Public Health.
The Faculty of Public Health trains specialists with higher education in Public Health, Health Management, Health Care and Nursing and Midwifery. The Faculty comprises ten departments with 116 lecturers, 48 of whom having academic ranks. Master's Degree training may be carried out in 15 accredited courses. Postgraduate education is organized in the form of continuing education courses as well as individual courses for postgraduate studies.
The structure of the PHF includes 10 departments: Social Medicine and Health Care Organization, Health Care Economics and Management, Hygiene and Epidemiology, Health Care, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation and Sea-healing, Disaster Medicine and Maritime Medicine, Optometry and Occupational Diseases, Speech Therapy and Medical Pedagogy, Department of Medical Equipment, Electronic and Information Technologies in Health Care, Kinesiotherapy. The MU-Varna University Centre for Marine Health Care, a corporate member of the International Association for Marine Health Care, and the Green Marine Yard of Varna, an early childhood socialization centre, are attached to the FPH at MU-Varna.
Based on contracts with a number of foreign universities, the Faculty of Public Health carries out an active international exchange of students in the form of internships and practices and different in duration periods of training.
FPH has the highest rating registered in the rating system of the Bulgarian higher education in the relevant field. Work in small groups allows the lecturers to pay individual attention to each student. Learners are provided with opportunities to participate in research projects in Europe and worldwide.
Graduates of the MU-Varna FPH work in medical and health institutions throughout the country and abroad, hold management and leadership positions in the health system and the NGO sector in the region and the country, work in scientific and business organizations in Bulgaria and abroad.
The Faculty conducts training of doctoral students in 9 doctoral programs in three professional fields, postgraduate training courses, carries out consultative and expert activities in support of organizations and institutions in the health and social field, including national and international organizations - the Bulgarian Ministry of Health, the European Commission, the WHO European Bureau, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Bank.
The scientific activity of the academic staff of the FPH covers through specialized and interdisciplinary research the broad field of public health and healthcare and Specialized scientific publications of the PHF of MU-Varna are the journals Scripta Scientifica Salutis Publicae and Health Economics and Management.
The MU-Varna PH is a member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), the Public Health Network in South-East Europe (PH-SEE), the WHO Regions for Health Network (RHN), Health Systems and Policy Monitoring (HSPM) Network of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, the European Health Management Association (EHMA) and the National Network on Global Health.
The Faculty is organizer and co-organizer of national and international scientific forums, workshops, discussion panels and events of public benefit. The FPH is the initiator and organizer of the "Sea and Health" annual festival, including scientific, sport and cultural events in support of the relationship between sea and health, between science and public life since 2014.
FPH is realizing the following activities:
1. "The Green Sea Yard of Varna", Bulgaria, aims at providing accessible space for early socialization of children and preventive psychosocial services by experts in Early Child Development. The first innovative space for interdisciplinary approach to ECD, early socialization, care & prevention space for interdisciplinary services based on the ideas of Francoise Dolto focused on child-parent relationships since 2018.
2. "Sea and Health" - annual festival, including scientific, sport and cultural events in support of the relationship between sea and health, between science and public life since 2014.
3.Training of health professionals in nurseries, kindergartens and schools on early childhood development, disease prevention, first aid, etc.
4. Training of teachers, pupils and parents to oppose drugs and other harmful substances.
5. Expert assistance to local government representatives on public health issues
