Dispatch from ASPHER Fellow Rana Orhan

This summer brought us a lot of opportunities in the field of climate and health. Thanks to your support and that from our partners, we have been selected to lead the 2021 Thematic Network on 'Climate action through public health education and training'. This means that ASPHER, together with our member schools and our partners, will work on a position paper to be presented to the European Commission. The kick-off meeting will take place in September (date to be confirmed), so I hope to see all of you there.
Additionally, recent catastrophic climate events show us that climate disasters are dangerously becoming a new normal. With our young professional Tara Chen and ASPHER President John Middleton, we argue that we must embolden our leaders to take the global action needed to avert climate catastrophe. Please read our opinion piece for The BMJ here.
Last but not least, I look forward to the session 'Climate and Health Action via SPHs' during the Deans' & Directors' Retreat. We will launch the adoption of the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education's core competencies during that session. We will also set the next step towards a dedicated group of public health schools working on climate and health education.
We have more in the pipeline, but that will follow with the next newsletter. If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to reach out to me via firstname.lastname@example.org.
